Fractured Fairy Tales
This week in second grade we are learning about fractured fairy tales. A fractured fairy tale is almost the same as any normal fairy tale you know, like Sleeping Beauty or Cindrella, but the author has changed some of the characters, part of the setting or part of the plot of the story. The last time the second grade was in the library, we heard the Disney story of Cinderella. This week we are reading, Bigfoot Cinderrrrrella by Tony Johnston.
Some of the other great fractured fairy tales we have in the library are: Little Red Cowboy Hat - from Little Red Riding Hood, The True Story of the Three Little Pigs - from The Three Little Pigs, Sumorella - from Cinderella and Beauty and the Beaks - from Beauty and the Beast to name a few.

Dewey Decimal System

This week in the library, 3rd and 4th grade students will be learning about the Dewey Decimal System. That is the 10 groups that nonfiction books are separated into in on the library shelves.
The dewey decimal system was created by a man named Melvil Dewey in the year 1876. This is a picture of Melvil Dewey.
This is a great link to the 10 groups within nonfiction. http://www.scottpublib.org/dragon/Dewey.html

Lost Book Makes a Return

We have been missing book number 4 in the Gordon Korman series On the Run. There are 6 books in this series and missing book number four was making readers mad that they were missing an important part of the series.
The wait is over. We now have a copy of The Stowaway Solution back on our library shelves.
The wait is over. We now have a copy of The Stowaway Solution back on our library shelves.
In this series two kids, Aiden and Meg Falconer have to help their parents. Their parents are about to be sent away to life in prison. Aiden and Meg have to follow a trail of clues to prove that their parents are innocent. Each book holds all the adventures that Aiden and Meg get into on the way to saving their parents. A great series by Mrs. Loughrin's favorite author, Gordon Korman. Once you start reading the books, it is hard to put them down!

Battle of the Books - Final Competition
The 4 fifth grade boys who were competing in the Statewide Battle Competition battled on February 25th. They scored 210 points out of the possible 375 points. We sent in that score to be compared to the other scores in the state of Wisconsin.
There was a tie for 1st place. Pleasant View Elementary School in Antigo and Green Lake Elementary School in Green Lake. These teams tied with 360 points!
We will do Battle of the Books again next year. I will let next years 4th and 5th grade students know the books hopefully by the end of this school year. Next year will we be more active in discussing the books and learning them inside out.
Get ready for Battle of the Books 2010!

New Playaways in the Library!
Playaways are for 4th and 5th grade students to check out. Remember you only get to have a playaway checked out for one week and they it has to be returned so that others can enjoy listening to their favorite books too.
Check out the front of the playaway box. If there is a sticker on it that says, "We have this as a book too!", check the shelves for the book so you can follow along as you listen.
Happy Listening!

Clovis Grove Golden Archer Winner!
The votes are all counted up from the Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd graders voting for their one favorite book to win the Golden Archer Award. The Clovis Grove Golden Archer winner for 2009 is Chester by Melanie Watt! This is supposed to be a book about a mouse, but greedy Chester thinks the book should be about him. He interrupts Melanie's book and writes and draws all over the pages with his red marker. Finally Melanie lets Chester be the star of the book, but remember, Melanie is in control of what happens! A great book that will make kids and adults laugh!
All of the Golden Archer books are now out on the shelves for students to check out and enjoy!
Thanks for voting! We'll do the Golden Archer Awards again next year. Get ready for Golden Archer Awards 2010!

Clovis Grove Battle of the Books
Last week we held the Clovis Grove Battle of the Books. Three teams competed but only one team could be the winner at Clovis Grove. Our winning team is made up of four 5th grade boys!
Check the window outside the library for pictures of the teams that participated in Battle of the Books.
These boys will continue to practice trivia about the book and will take a practice battle before the battle against all the other winning teams in Wisconsin. In the final battle the boys will have 30 minutes to answer 25 questions about the books they have read.
Good Luck!!!
